The global share of renewable energies is growing continuously. The aim is to become independent of fossil fuels and achieve a CO2-neutral energy supply. In the EU, the share of renewable energies in total energy consumption is set to rise to 42.5% by 2030. Energy storage systems are essential in order to make optimum use of energy from renewable sources and at the same time keep the electricity grids stable.

Battery storage: the key technology

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability and the efficient use of the grid infrastructure.
Large-scale stationary storage systems ensure that renewable energy is always available at the right time. The strategic placement of battery storage systems in the electricity grid reduces the need for grid expansion and improves the use of existing infrastructure.

Flexibility and efficiency

The use of battery storage systems – both in combination with renewable energies and independently of them – creates the necessary flexibility to drive forward the expansion of renewable energies and enable their connection to the electricity grids.

Challenges and solutions

The energy transition and the expansion of renewable energies pose new challenges for the electricity grid, such as ensuring grid stability and minimizing overloads. This leads to increasing energy losses and higher electricity prices. Germany therefore urgently needs large storage capacities to effectively meet these challenges. There is already overcapacity of over 100 gigawatts in the sunny and windy midday hours, which would be lost without storage.

Importance of battery storage systems

Battery storage systems are an indispensable component for the development of an autonomous and sustainable energy system in Europe. In view of the increasing expansion of renewable energies, a corresponding infrastructure is required to ensure the stability of the electricity grid and the security of the energy supply. Battery storage systems also offer flexible and extremely profitable options in electricity trading. Around 83 gigawatt hours of energy storage capacity must be provided in order to achieve the target of an 80% share of renewable energy in Germany by 2030. However, only 0.45 gigawatt hours were installed in 2021. This rapidly increasing demand for energy storage solutions (with an average annual growth rate of 78.6%) offers a unique opportunity to invest in future energy infrastructure.
